Michigan Camping Guide

Michigan Camping provides a relaxing way to unwind from the daily pressures of the real world.  It gives us a chance to get back to nature.  In Michigan, the opportunities to camp in Michigan are abundant with the nearly 100 Michigan State Parks and 4 Great Lakes bordering our state.  In addition, we possess several National Parks along with numerous private campgrounds sprinkled throughout the Lower & Upper Peninsulas.  With over 11,000 inland lakes and 14,000 campsites, the opportunities to fish, hike, mountain bike and camp are plentiful.  In Michigan, the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) administer and maintain the State Park system.  Metro Detroit residents have many quality lakes and rivers to choose from for Michigan fishing opportunities.  Lake St. Clair is the crown jewel for residents.  The lake offers world class muskies and smallmouth bass fishing.

Over 5 million campers a year visit the park system with the majority of use during the June-August timeframe.  Some parks such as Portage Lake and Mitchell State Park are open all year.  Michigan camping in the fall is gaining popularity and is a very good time to camp.  The colors of the maples and oak trees are a sight to behold and absolutely awesome.  An annual permit for $20 or a daily permit for $3 is required for entry.  Reservations for State Parks are suggested and can be made at 1-800-44-PARKS.  They also can be made online this year using the online reservation system at the Michigan DNR site.

Private Campgrounds are often a popular choice and many have golf, fishing, and swimming available.  The Michigan Campgrounds Directory gives  you the insight to making a good decision on where to camp.   It's no surprise so many people "Say Yes to Michigan."

Many people incorporate fishing into their plans when they camp.   Many of the Michigan State Parks are built around lakes.  Also, several State Parks dot the shoreline of Lake Michigan.  If you are camping in Michigan on June 8th & 09th, don't forget to take your kids fishing.  This year, the DNR's free fishing weekend celebration is June 8th & 9th.  It is an excellent way to introduce your friends or children into the sport of fishing. Visit the Michigan Fishing Guide for more information on Michigan Fishing opportunities..

The DNR Master Angler Awards program recognizes anglers who catch large fish.  The year 2000 marked the 27th 'birthday' of Michigan's highly successful Master Angler Program. Launched in 1973 to better recognize anglers who catch unusually large fish, the Master Angler program began with just 19 species of fish eligible to win distinctive Master Angler shoulder patches.
